Fortunately for me, my parents said no thanks. I was homeschooled at the time. I was quite good with my math classes, as they were … Nothing special, just normal, traditional math lessons filled with repetitive problem-solving. If my parents had turned to Singapore Math, I think it would be a train wreck for her and for me.
Singapore Math's main attraction is the focus on teaching mathematical problem solving thinking instead of repetitive.The goal is to give students an understanding of the way place Math Works drilling formulas in their brains. Singapore Math students are walked through each component of the problem then presented them with the whole problem to solve. The goal is to train students to think actively as they work through each step of a problem, instead of mindlessly repetitive plugging in formulas to problems.
Sounds great, right? Not to learn, if you have already trained math the old fashioned way.For years I had taught mathematics by working out practical exercises. Please do not take my exercises and expect that I think of it. This is a big leap for me!
If I had started my parents, with Singapore Math from the beginning, I would have known otherwise. But even if I could make the leap, there's another problem with Singapore Math, that I think is even more difficult to overcome, our teachers.
As hard as it can be for me and for older U.S. students how to make Ithe transition from traditional mathematics to Singapore Math, it must be even more difficult for the U.S. teachers because they are just older students themselves. Teachers have more to unlearn than the rest of us because she spent several years in school and then to do in years of mathematics teachers in the traditional way. Old habits are hard to break!
